The first time i heard it on the news about the BN-led-government wanting to consider Sime Darby’s proposal to take the National Heart Institute, commonly known as IJN, an acronym in bahasa melayu, it gave me deep angst in my heart. I’m sure i’m not alone. With so much chaos in the local scenario; albeit politics and economics, the IJN issue is depressing indeed.
The people often say “The Heart is the Symbol of Love”. Perhaps we should rename IJN as the National Love Institute. Surely, IJN can’t be heartless.
There has been various reports coming in the media with supposed justifications, still very perplexing. The latest coming from Tun Musa Hitam, claiming Sime Darby Berhad merely hoped to boost the quality of service at IJN. But why IJN ? Why don’t they take over the Sungai Buloh Hospital ? Why bother taking over at all ? Why do Sime Darby, which is a massive multinational, cash laden and fluid, wants to take over a pertinent government health institute, when it can splash huge amounts to built another ?
Apart from being a national institute to train and develop local cardiac specialist, IJN provides essential services to the poor and the disadvantaged. The goverment can’t wane its obligations to its people. The gentleman who was tasked in setting up IJN, Tan Sri Dr. Yahya Awang made known his disgust and stated the whole exercise is “suspicious”.
I agree with YB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, that this postponement of IJN takeover until further studies are made, is purely a political ploy pending the Kuala terengganu by-election. Similarly, the statements from BN-led-government about Eurocopter purchase.
Sime Darby, a well known real estate developer too, surely has big long term plans. Just across IJN, the National Library sits. whose neighbours’ are Bernama, National Blood Bank & Istana Budaya. Adjacent to IJN is the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (KLGH). And not far is Kampung Baru. Don’t they all are sitting on a goldmine? Next you know, KLGH is up for sale!
Ask any Ali, Tan or Muthu, they will all agree that it will take many years maybe decades to recover huge investments, so taking over IJN makes good business sense. Save half the cost and make money faster, supported by excellent proven infrastructure. Not forgetting the expansion plan by IJN to increase beds etc.
What worries us most, will fees remain the same, varied they may be ? The voices from political leaders and parties, to IJN doctors, IJN staffs, the Council of Churches to Malaysian Trade Union Congress have been loud and clear. Even MCA & MIC had opposed the take over. It’s no big surprise that Umno failed to voice its objections. What more Umno leaders ? They will say they are championing the masses, but only concerned about their pockets and the upcoming UMNO general assembly.
At the end of the day, many questions need urgent answers. One of the major reasons of the rise in cardiac complications is STRESS, and yes, the IJN issue has been very stressful. What more for National Leaders like the PM. Can you imagine the Prime Minister, having so much ubiquitous headache, succumbing to Heart complications, being a patient of IJN, tells a poor mother or child that she has to take her heart somewhere else. Do you think he’s going to sing “I don’t have the heart,….to save you”! The Prime Minister has no worries, the BN-LED-GOVERNMENT will save him, zero cost! And the blessed child?
We the people have to save IJN! It belongs to us, the rakyat. You and me, all of us are the rakyat. Place your palm on your chest and feel your heartbeat. The BN-led-government can’t take away our hearts. The Govenment can’t be heartless to its people.
