PKR belittles denial of PM-DPM rift

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leaders have pooh-poohed the Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s denial that there is a growing rift between him and his boss.

“It takes more than Muhyiddin’s famous rudeness” to dispel the rumours, “which are being spread even through pro-Umno websites,” said PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin in an interview with FMT.

Speaking to reporters in Pagoh on Tuesday, Muhyiddin used strong language to attack DAP leader Lim Kit Siang, who had challenged him to come clean on speculation that there was trouble at the top, manifested largely by the deputy premier’s apparently lukewarm treatment of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s 1Malaysia project and his pro-Malay rhetoric, which some see as bordering on bigotry.

“There certainly is trouble – or troubles – at the top,” said Shamsul, “and not just between Muhyiddin and Najib.”

He pointed out that Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had more than once made candid revelations that were embarrassing to Najib, who was his predecessor at the ministry.

Zahid has been unusually forthright about scandals involving the Defence Ministry — the theft of fighter-jet engines, the sale of military secrets to foreign embassies, and trouble with one of the Scorpene submarines purchased in suspicious circumstances.

Shamsul said Zahid’s candour was “out of sync with the Umno convention of covering up abuses of power. Why?”

And Zahid is no small fry in Umno. He is the party’s most senior vice-president.

PKR strategy director Tian Chua said Muhyiddin’s denial was worthless against the points brought up by those who are speculating about the leadership tussle.

“Of course, he will deny it,” Tian said in an interview with Harakah Daily.

“It is a given that he will issue a denial at this stage but (if you) assess it neutrally against the facts that have been laid down in the blogs and the news websites, you will find that he actually hasn’t addressed the arguments point by point.”

In his denial, Muhyiddin accused Lim of fuelling the speculation, but avid Internet surfers know that stories about the power struggle were first buzzed by pro-Umno websites.

“I think Lim Kit Siang doesn’t understand my stand on 1Malaysia because his head is filled with problems, compounded by the problems of the opposition parties,” he said in his statement in Pagoh.
