The reluctance of the Federal Government to engage with the Selangor State Government with its newly announced special Cabinet committee on water issues in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya is a stark reflection of the highly partisan and biased manner in which it has been operating.

It should be obvious to the Federal Cabinet, that any discussion that does not engage the Selangor State Government will not have any meaningful outcome. This is yet another example of the obstructionist behaviour of the Federal Government, which places politics and profits for their cronies above the people of Selangor.

Since 2008, the Selangor State Government has patiently and consistently put forward multiple proposals to the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water to restructure the water industry in Selangor holistically. It is the lack of political backbone from the Minister Peter Chin to give the green light to our proposal that is the impediment.

The Selangor government is elected to represent the interests and will of the people of the state. We do not take our responsibilities lightly. This means we will not stand idly by while a privately owned corporation causes panic among the public with what we believe is an unjustified water rationing exercise.

Representing the interests of the people of Selangor also means we will not continue with lopsided concession agreements that allow water tariff rates to increase to levels beyond the reach of ordinary Selangor households.

Our intentions and conscience are clear, that is to safeguard the interest and rights of the people of Selangor. To this end, the takeover of Syabas will proceed with full speed as announced.
