Malaysian opposition to mount rally as Anwar trial opens

www.afp.com

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7, 2009 (AFP) – Malaysia’s opposition said it will mount a rally of thousands of black-clad supporters Wednesday outside the court where leader Anwar Ibrahim is to go on trial for sodomy.
Shamsul Iskandar Mohammad Akin, youth chief of Anwar’s Keadilan party, said he was aiming to gather 5,000 supporters for a march to the court complex, despite warnings from the government against creating a disturbance.

“We want to have a gathering to show our support for Anwar and to tell the world that these allegations made against him are false and baseless,” he told AFP Tuesday.

“The government is attacking him because they do not want to see his reform agenda for Malaysia to succeed,” he said.

Anwar, a former deputy premier who was sacked and jailed on separate sodomy and corruption charges a decade ago, has rejected the new allegations made by a former aide as a conspiracy to derail his plan to topple the government.

In 2004 the earlier sodomy conviction was overturned, allowing Anwar to go free after six years in jail and build an opposition alliance which won a third of parliamentary seats last year in an unprecedented performance.

“Many of the people who were responsible for what happened to Anwar in 1998 are still in power and are involved in this case and are carrying out their vendetta against him,” Shamsul said

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has reportedly warned protesters not to create a disturbance at the Kuala Lumpur court complex where the trial will open on Wednesday.

“If they create chaos and go against the law (to) disrupt security and the judiciary, the authorities will certainly react,” he said according to news website Malaysiakini.

Police were tight-lipped on the number of personnel to be deployed at the court, and whether they would draft in the riot police and water cannon which have been deployed at other politically sensitive trials.

“As long as things are peaceful, there should be no issue,” deputy national police chief Ismail Omar told AFP.

“We are prepared for the situation,” he said, declining to elaborate on the size of the police presence.

However, other officials said police would begin deploying around the building before dawn on Wednesday, and that roadblocks would be set up around the complex.

Anwar’s first conviction triggered massive protests and complaints from home and abroad that the trial was politically motivated, after he reputedly fell out of favour with then-premier Mahathir Mohamad.

North Korea using Malaysian bank to deal weapons with Myanmar

North Korea sought payment through a bank in Malaysia for its suspected shipment of weapons to Myanmar that is being carried on a freighter tracked by the U.S. Navy, a source said Saturday, according to Yonhap News.

The visit by a U.S. envoy to Malaysia this weekend will focus on ways to cut off the payment transaction for the cargo from the bank in Malaysia to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, the source said.

“Kim will have a hard time collecting his money,” the high-level source said, speaking strictly on condition of anonymity. The source declined to identify the bank due to diplomatic concerns.

Philip Goldberg, the U.S. coordinator for the implementation of a U.N. Security Council resolution that punishes North Korea for its May 25 nuclear test, is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia on Sunday.

The visit comes after the White House said late last month that U.S. President Barack Obama discussed North Korea and financial regulations with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak on by phone.

It also comes as North Korea’s Kang Nam freighter is apparently returning home after being tracked by a U.S. Navy destroyer that suspects it is carrying cargo banned under the resolution.

Resolution 1874, which reinforced sanctions that were imposed after North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, bans Pyongyang from exporting any type of weapons — light or heavy.

According to another source in Seoul, the Kang Nam is believed to be carrying small Soviet-era arms such as AK-47 rifles and RPG-7 anti-tank launchers.

AK-47s and RPG-7s are two of the most widely traded Soviet-era weapon types that North Korea is capable of producing on its own.

“Kim appears to have received earnest money for the shipment, but it is a small sum compared to the payment held up in Malaysia,” the source said.

DSAI was unable to obtain a fair hearing in the corruption/abuse of power trial in 1998

1. In the corruption trial, Judge Augustine Paul allowed the prosecution to amend the charges such that DSAI was alleged to have abused his power to protect himself from “embarrassment” rather than “criminal action or proceedings” and refer to the “allegations” against him. The change in wording meant that the prosecution did not have to prove the truth of the allegations made by Ummi and Azizan.

2. Evidence, i.e. the mattress, was expunged from the court record and as a result the defense was not permitted to challenge the evidence. It should be noted that the government chemist had cautioned that the forensic evidence was not conclusive, “DNA should not be the sole foundation for finding a person guilty”.

3. Criminal Investigations officer Mohamad Rodwan Yusuf said he could not guarantee that the mattress had not been tampered with. No photographs were taken when it was seized and it was kept for four months before being sent for testing. Furthermore, police had no records of who had access to the mattress during that period.

4. Judge Augustine Paul ruled the defense of political conspiracy as irrelevant. In the 2001 Federal Court hearing of the appeal of lawyer Zainur Zakaria ‘s contempt of court case, the judges were manifestly displeased with this ruling and commented that the defense had the right to choose its line of defense as it saw fit, and was entitled to call witnesses as it deemed necessary without interference.

5. The defense team was harassed during the course of the trial; defense lawyer Zainur bin Zakaria was held in contempt of court and sentenced to three month imprisonment. This judgment was later overturned by the Federal Court with severe reprimand of the judge in June 2001, with one of the judges describing Judge Augustine Paul as “more like acting as counsel for the prosecution”.

6. Police officers searched the offices of another member of the defense team, Pawancheek Merican, on 3rd Dec 1998, on the pretext that documents were reported missing by DPP Azahar, who did not give the police reason to suspect the defense team.

To: Malaysian Prime Minister Mr. Tun Razak Najib,

I wish you good luck for your work; I heard you are appointed as Prime Minister of Malaysia.

However, we need to end all issues regarding the murder case of my daughter as soon as possible and in a short time because the people from two countries have been waiting for the case to be solved.

The relationship between two countries have suffered and there is improbable situation continuing due to a murder case of my daughter Altantuya.

It requires focusing the matter now on my two orphaned grandsons, sons of Altantuya – we need a solution to the civil suit I have filed – from YOU, Malaysian Government, and the police.

I would like to calm down my daughter’s spirit by conducting a funeral for her, which I have not done until all issues surrounding my daughter’s death is settle.

Jenaka bersama Sahibussamahah Prof Dr Mustafa Ceric

TURKEY 29 Mar 2009 Municipal election a test for governing party’s platform

The party of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), is expected to take its national lead into the municipal election, which will be seen as a referendum on national issues. The campaigns in 81 provinces, among which there are 16 metropolitan municipalities to be won, can be expected to reflect the Islamist-secularist divide in Turkey, which is a constitutionally secular country with a population overwhelmingly composed of Muslims.

The AKP’s main rivals are the secularist center-left Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party. The CHP is the oldest political party in Turkey. The Islamists defeated the CHP-Democratic Left Party alliance in the 2007 general election, turning the country away from its secular roots.

According to Turkey’s Zaman Today in Sep 2008, the AK Party holds 12 metropolitan and 58 regular municipalities. The CHP, which is the main opposition party, holds eight, two of them metropolitan (Izmir and Mersin). The DTP holds the Diyarbakir Metropolitan Municipality and the Batman, Sirnak, Hakkari and Tunceli municipalities. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) holds the Kastamonu, Gümüshane, Igdir and Nigde municipalities. The DSP holds the Eskisehir Metropolitan Municipality and two other cities, namely Ordu and Bartin. The True Path Party (DYP) holds only Elazig, while the Felicity Party (SP) holds Mardin and the mayor of Ardahan is an independent.

Zaman Today noted that recent public opinion polls that put the incumbent AK Party in first place with around 50 percent popular support.

Murder of ‘Far Eastern Mata Hari’ linked to Malaysia’s PM-in-waiting

Michael Sheridan and Matthew Campbell | March 23, 2009
Article from: The Australian

A FRENCH arms company is at the centre of a deepening scandal involving the sale of three submarines, the murder of a beautiful Mongolian interpreter and the man most likely to become prime minister of Malaysia next month.

All three have been linked in a sensational sequence of revelations that has convinced many Malaysians that the woman was killed to silence her claim for a share in the rewards of the transaction.

The scandal exploded last week after French newspaper Liberation alleged the submarines deal and the murder of Altantuya Shariibuu, 28, were connected.

A glamorous, cosmopolitan woman, Altantuya grew up in St Petersburg, spoke Russian, Chinese, Korean and English, moved in elite circles and has been dubbed “a Far Eastern Mata Hari”. She became the mistress of a Malaysian political fixer and was allegedly trying to extort money from him at the time of her violent death.

Two members of an elite Malaysian police unit that protects top politicians are on trial in Kuala Lumpur, accused of shooting her in the jungle and then blowing up her body with military explosives. Special Branch officers Azilah Hadri, 32, and Sirul Azhar Umar, 36, could go to the gallows if convicted of abducting and murdering Altantuya on October 19, 2006. A verdict is expected early next month.

Their trial is unfolding as Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak stands on the verge of taking over as premier after a ruling party leadership election, due within days.

Mr Najib was accused in parliament by a young opposition MP, Gobind Singh Deo, of involvement in the murder. Mr Deo was suspended by the speaker for making the remark. Mr Najib has strongly denied any involvement.

Testimony in an earlier court case has established an intimate personal and financial connection between Altantuya and a close aide to Mr Najib, who was defence minister at the time of the submarine deal.

The aide, Abdul Razak Baginda, was acquitted by a court last November of being an accessory in the murder. He has since been working on a doctorate at Trinity College, Oxford.

Mr Baginda admitted Altantuya was his mistress for about a year and prosecutors said she had demanded money from him after their break-up.

Just before her death, she arrived in Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by a Mongolian shaman, who was to put a curse on Mr Baginda if he did not pay up.

Altantuya was dragged away from outside Mr Baginda’s home by two Special Branch officers, but he was acquitted after maintaining that he had never given orders for her to be harmed.

The Liberation expose linking the murder to the shadowy world of arms contracts has embarrassed the French warship firm DCNS. Armaris, a firm now merged with DCNS, sold the three submarines to Malaysia in 2002 for E1 billion.

Attention has centred on why Armaris paid E114 million to a Malaysian company called Perimekar in 2006.

Opposition leaders alleged in parliament that the payment was a “commission” for intermediaries and that Perimekar was secretly owned by Mr Baginda. Mr Najib replied that it was not a “commission” and that Perimekar was a “project services provider”. Liberation alleged Altantuya learned of the payment and demanded $US500,000.

DCNS has refused to comment. It is already the subject of a French judicial investigation into corrupt practices. Last week, efforts to contact Mr Baginda, a self-styled political analyst, at his new home in Oxford were unsuccessful.

Mr Najib has avoided public comment but his wife told Agence France Presse that she was “shocked” by attempts to link her husband to the case.

Rosmah Mansor : Najib telah ditakdirkan menjadi PM – Kami semakin matang… semakin kuat

Rosmah desperate ingin menjadi First Lady ?
Rosmah desperate ingin menjadi First Lady ?

Begitulah ungkapan Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor di dalam temuramah media bersama The Asscoiated Press. Rosmah turut yakin bahawa Najib telah ditakdirkan untuk menjadi Perdana Menteri.

Pelik… belum pasti lagi jawatan PM, Rosmah bersungguh-sungguh mempertahankan Najib.

Rosmah says Najib’s destiny to lead

PUTRAJAYA, March 13 – Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of Malaysia’s next prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, said today it is his destiny to lead the country, despite opposition attempts to link him to corruption and murder.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Rosmah said the attacks on her husband have made the couple more mature and stronger.

Najib is scheduled to take over from current prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi early next month.
“Let’s not do anything unethical to stop it. It is his turn,” Rosmah said in her first interview with an international news agency.

If “God says it is his turn, it is his turn,” Rosmah added. “That is the thing we all have to accept, because when (Abdullah became leader) … we believed that it was his time, his destiny and we went on with our lives.”

Opposition leaders have tried to link Najib and Rosmah to the killing of a Mongolian woman and accused him of corruption in government deals to buy French submarines and Russian jets. Najib has rejected the accusations.

Asked about the allegations linking them to the killing, Rosmah said she ignores such “mischievous statements from mischievous people.”

The opposition contends that Najib was involved in the slaying of Altantuya Shaariibuu, a 28-year-old Mongolian translator who was having an affair with a close friend of Najib.

Government lawyers say Shaariibuu was shot in October 2006. Her body was then blown up in a forest outside Kuala Lumpur, and only fragments were found.

Prosecutors alleged that Abdul Razak Baginda, Najib’s friend, ordered Shaariibuu killed after she started pestering him for money. Abdul Razak was acquitted last October of abetting the slaying.

A court is scheduled to decide next month whether to convict two police officers charged with carrying out the killing.

Rosmah said her tribulations last year, when public suspicions of Najib gained strength because of blogs that carried allegations against him, have made the couple “more mature … more strong.”

“If we had not gone through this, we would not have known what resilience is all about,” Rosmah said.

She stressed that her conscience was clear, saying that her own test of character is “whether you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, whether you like yourself or not, whether you have told the truth or not.” – AP
