PM Najib and Hishamuddin must come clean on the latest allegation !

Securency money trail nudges Malaysia’s political royalty

Date: June 06 2011

Richard Baker and Nick McKenzie

THE Reserve Bank firm Securency hired a company owned by a close relative of Malaysia’s Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister – the two men with whom the Gillard government is negotiating to swap asylum seekers – to help win banknote contracts.

The revelation comes amid growing sensitivity within the federal government about the Australian Federal Police investigation of Securency and the potential for Australia’s international relations to be harmed if foreign officials allegedly linked to the RBA firm’s bribes are named.

The Age has learned that Securency signed Kuala Lumpur firm Liberal Technology as its Malaysian agent in 2009. The biggest individual shareholder in Liberal Technology is businessman Haris Onn Hussein.

Haris Onn Hussein is well connected – his cousin is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, and his brother is Home Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who is expected in Canberra soon to sign the deal under which Australia will transfer 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia and accept 4000 refugees in return.

Securency hired Haris Onn Hussein in the hope he would offer it access to, and influence over, Malaysia’s top politicians.

It is a common in parts of Asia for the relatives of politicians to be hired by foreign companies as agents.

The Age understands that some officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other agencies are keen for the AFP not to identify certain foreign dignitaries or their relatives who are alleged to be linked to Securency in order to protect Australia’s broader overseas interests.

Securency, half-owned and supervised by the Reserve Bank, has for two years been investigated by the AFP and the British Serious Fraud Office for allegedly bribing public officials in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Nigeria to win banknote supply contracts.

Under Australian law, it is a criminal offence for a company or individual to pay, or offer a benefit to, a foreign government official or their close relatives to obtain a business advantage.

Australia is yet to prosecute a foreign bribery case, but Securency – which has four RBA-appointed directors on its board – may be the first, given the two-year AFP investigation and the arrest and questioning of some employees and agents last year. No charges have yet been laid.

Haris Onn Hussein and Hishammuddin Tun Hussein are political royalty in Malaysia. Their father, the late Tun Hussein Onn, was Malaysia’s prime minister between 1976 and 1981. He was succeeded as prime minister by Mahathir Mohamad. Their grandfather, Dato Onn Jaafar, was the founder of Malaysia’s ruling United Malays National Organisation political party.

Hishammuddin Tun Hussein is vice president of UMNO.

Haris Onn Hussein owns shares in or sits on the board of several companies that have benefited from Malaysian government concessions.

In 2006, the Malaysian finance ministry told cigarette and alcohol manufacturers that they would need to buy security labels provided by Haris Onn Hussein’s Liberal Technology to legally sell their products. Haris Onn Hussein is also associated with a company given a 34-year concession to operate a major Malaysian toll road.

Under Securency’s corporate structure, its board should have been informed and approved of Mr Haris Onn’s company being signed as an agent.

The Age can also reveal Securency engaged Malaysian state MP and a former UMNO branch treasurer, Dato Abdullah Hasnan Kamaruddin, as another agent. Mr Kamaruddin was the UNMO party treasurer in Dr Mahatir’s home state of Kedah, a position that gave him substantial influence.

Despite engaging the extremely well-connected Liberal Technology as agent in 2009, Securency is believed not to have won any further banknote supply contracts.

The company won its last major Malaysian contract in 2004. At that time, Mr Razak was the country’s defence minister and Hishammuddin Tun Hussein the education minister. It also won a smaller contract in 1998.

The Age is not suggesting Mr Razak nor Hishammuddin Tun Hussein were involved in Securency’s deals.

The company’s 1998 and 2004 contracts involved another Malaysian agent, businessman, arms broker and former UMNO official, Abdul Kayum Syed Ahmad.

He has since been arrested and questioned by Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Commission over the Securency deals and his use of commissions paid by the RBA firms.

The AFP began investigating Securency in May 2009 after The Age revealed its payment of tens-of-millions-of-dollars in commissions to politically connected middlemen to win contracts in Nigeria, Vietnam and India.

The company wired millions of dollars into tax haven bank accounts in an effort to conceal the beneficiaries of its payments in an apparent breach of the RBA’s rules.

The AFP and Britain’s Serious Fraud Office have conducted several raids on the offices of Securency and its British half-owner, Innovia Films. Properties owned by serving and former executives and agents have been raided and several arrests made. No charges have been laid yet.

Securency’s managing director, Myles Curtis, and chief financial officer, John Ellery, were forced out of the company in March last year. Securency’s deputy chairman, English businessman Bill Lowther, resigned in October following his arrest by the Serious Fraud Office.

RBA governor Glenn Stevens has defended his bank’s appointees who have chaired and sat on the Securency board since 1996, telling a federal parliamentary committee in November that he had not seen any evidence to suggest they had acted inappropriately.

The RBA plans to sell Securency.

Eskay: Saya tidak tuduh Anwar zina

Eskay denies hiring woman in sex video

Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, the main person behind the screening of a sex video featuring a man resembling Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, has denied any role in hiring the woman seen in the footage.

“No, I did not. However, I cannot reveal much as the matter is still under police investigation,” he said when quizzed by journalists on whether he had played the role of a pimp, since he was the third man seen in the controversial video.

The woman is allegedly a sex worker. Her identity, along with the location where the video was recorded, remains unknown but Eskay has reiterated that it was “made in Malaysia”.

Today, he claimed that he had not accused Anwar of committing zina (adultery).

“I want the reporters to ask… because you guys know him (Anwar) best – you have been interviewing him – adakah ini (is this) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim?

“Fitnah atau tak fitnah (slander or not), it has nothing to do with me. It is up to the public to perceive who he (Anwar) is. As far as I am concerned, I will do whatever needs to be done.”

Eskay said a lot of accusations have been made against him following the revelation and that he wanted to set the record straight.

This was why he took the oath (sumpah laknat) at the Sentul mosque last Friday.

“I (did) this to prove that I did not lie. If I have lied, (tragedy) will befall me.

“In fact, I had challenged Anwar to do so in the same (Amru Al As) mosque, but he did not appear.”

The screening of the video on March 21 by ‘Datuk T’ – the code-name used by Eskay, Risda chairperson Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik and former Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim – has created a political storm.

Anwar’s family members and party colleagues have dismissed his purported involvement, pointing to physical differences between him and the man in the video.

Eskay’s role in the matter has been complicated by the fact that he is seen in the early parts of the video. He has not denied that he is the third person in the video clip.

He had previously said he decided to screen the video, after recovering a secret recording device located in the room, to expose Anwar as “an immoral person”.

Eskay claimed that he made the discovery after being instructed by Anwar to search for an Omega brand watch left in the room.

No idea when he will be charged

Police have classified the case under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possession of, and showing, obscene material.

Eskay said he had no idea when he would be charged.

He explained that he had been called to the Kepong police station today to explain why he took an oath at the the mosque, which caused a commotion.

“They asked me who (else) was in the mosque. I told them that I knew (only that) most of them were reporters and observers who I did not know (personally).”

He admitted he was wearing a bullet-proof vest during the ceremony, explaining that it was necessary.

“I was a former (Thai honorary) consul-general (in Langkawi) and the vest is mine and does not belong to anyone else. I have handled peace talks in southern Thailand, so it is mine.

“I was wearing it as it turned out to be unruly at the mosque,” he said.

Eskay criticised the disruptive behaviour of a group of opposition supporters at the mosque.

“This is a house of God. Such things should not happen. I was there not to laknat orang (to curse others) but to curse myself. If I have lied, it will bring about (a bad) situation (for me).

“Hence, why stop me and bring about this commotion at the mosque? It is not proper.”

Eskay was unable to confirm if the two others behind the screening of the sex video – Rahim, who is a former Malacca chief minister (left) and Shuib – also wore bullet-proof vests when at the mosque.

The duo had accompanied Eskay to the mosque, but did not take the oath.

According to Eskay, Shuib and Rahim are expected to have their statements recorded by the police later today.

On taking a polygraph test, as suggested by Kelantan executive councillor Husam Musa, Eskay said he was up to the challenge.

“That is why I want Anwar to also take the challenge and the condition which I want to impose is that Anwar must do it first and then (I will do so), as I have (sworn) the sumpah laknat oath,” he said.

“Also, I want it (the event) to be covered ‘live’ by you reporters, so all people can see and there will not be any accusations of conspiracy.”

Eskay, a businessperson, left in a silver Waja with two men who appeared to be bodyguards.

However, after waiting for two hours, there was no sign of Shuib and Rahim at the police station

Apa susahnya Felda lupuskan hutang sara diri peneroka ?

Media milik kerajaan BN hari ini menyifatkan desakan Anak bermotifkan politik dengan laporan seperti berikut:

KUALA LUMPUR 24 April – Desakan Persatuan Anak-Anak Peneroka Kebangsaan (Anak) agar kerajaan melupuskan hutang pinjaman sara diri peneroka yang dikatakan menjangkau RM500 juta hanya bermotifkan politik.

Pengerusi Felda, Tan Sri Mohd.

Apa Guna Menjadi Tuan Kalau Maruah Tergadai ?

Slogan Bangsa Bermaruah melalui Ketuanan Rakyat sewajarnya mengambil tempat. Malaysia bukan milik Umno.

Rakyat Malaysia semakin bijak, khususnya masyarakat Melayu.

Apalah guna bangga menjadi tuan, kalau maruah tergadai tanpa nisan !

Zaid’s petition: Malaysia’s judicial rot deepens

By Kim Quek
06.08.2010

Justice Azahar’s Mohamed’s decision to strike out Zaid Ibrahim’s application to annul Malaysia’s dirtiest by-election – for the Hulu Selangor constituency– was completely within my expectation. In fact, the moment I learned that Chief Justice Zaki Azmi – a former Umno stalwart – had appointed Azahar to handle the case, I knew that Zaid’s prospect was doomed.

For, wasn’t Azahar the judge who handed out the atrociously ‘double-standard’ judgment in the Perak Speaker vs Speaker case on 8th Sept 2009? In that judgment over the chaotic state assembly sitting on 7th May 2009, he rejected Pakatan speaker Sivakumar’s complaints against the BN speaker Ganesan on ground that he had no jurisdiction to intervene into affairs of the assembly. But he failed to realize that by declaring Ganesan’s election as speaker during the same assembly sitting as a lawful act, he was in fact committing the same intervention he said he wanted to avoid in the first place. (Azahar’s self-contradiction was so blatant that it earned the title of “Speaker vs Speaker: Judge Azahar slapping his own face?” to an article in my book “The March to Putrajaya”).

Judge Azahar’s reputation dubious

And, wasn’t Azahar also the prosecutor accused of fabricating false evidence against Anwar Ibrahim during the infamous Anwar corruption trial a decade ago which was resoundingly condemned around the world as a heinous travesty of justice and an outright political persecution? (This is an accusation that Azahar was not known to have denied, see Note 1 below)

What sort of outcome can you expect when a former Umno stalwart appoints a judge of such reputation to hear a case of such high political stake?

Hulu Selangor : Search for the right candidate

ANALYSIS
By JOCELINE TAN

The hottest action in the coming Hulu Selangor by-election has been behind the scenes as would-be candidates and their supporters lobby their respective leaders.

HULU Selangor has not seen this much political activity in years.

The number of people and cars that flooded the area when Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was there last weekend has been the talk of villagers.

It was the first time many of them had seen the Prime Minister in the flesh.

Even the fact that Najib took a bath in the home of a Felda settler is being talked about. After all, how often does the Prime Minister bathe in one’s house?

Some of the Chinese reporters joked that it was a pity the Malays did not believe in gambling because the owner of the house in the Pandamaran Chinese new village that Najib visited during the Chinese New Year, struck the lottery three times, two of which were first prize wins.

The level of activity in Hulu Selangor will increase even more over the next few weeks. But the real action is actually happening behind the scenes.

There has been intense lobbying on both sides on the issue of candidates. Although whoever wins will have only about two years on the job, the win will be a staging point for them to contest the next general election.

The lobbying on the Barisan Nasional side initially included both MIC and Umno until Najib put his foot down on MIC getting the seat.

But the word on the ground is that the candidate may not necessarily be MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel, the only name nominated by the MIC.

MIC information chief and Putera MIC coordinator P. Kamalanathan is apparently being considered as well.

The Barisan leadership is now weighing the merits and demerits of the two men. Palanivel, 61, has the experience and stature. But he had spent four terms as Hulu Selangor MP before his 2008 defeat and, given the way the locals talk about him, it seems like he has accumulated quite a bit of baggage.

It is no secret that his political career hinges on whether he contests and wins the seat.

Kamalanathan, 44, a public relations consultant, is a relatively fresh face.

He was born in Kuala Lumpur but has lived in Rawang since he was a year old which probably makes him the most local of all the local faces being touted for the seat.

PKR has no shortage of names for the seat and the lobbying on this side has been even more intense than that in Barisan.

“A by-election is the best battle to get into. The national machinery is there, money pours in and there is no shortage of campaigners and ceramah speakers,” Selangor state assembly Speaker Teng Chang Khim said.

But the lobbying has narrowed down to three names: Hulu Selangor PKR treasurer and neurosurgeon Dr Halili Rahmat, party coordinator and lawyer Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and PKR Youth chief and lawyer Shamsul Iskandar.

Dr Halili has emerged as the clear favourite although some claimed he is rather reluctant, having lost twice before – first in Kuala Kubu Baru and then Batang Kali.

Dr Halili had jokingly told some friends: “Ini macam kahwin dua; mula-mula seronok, kemudian banyak masalah” (it is like having two wives, fun in the beginning, lots of problems later on).

He was probably thinking of his busy medical practice and the fact that this will be a short-lived term.

Dr Halili, reportedly the first Malay neurosugeon in the country, is from a kampung in Batang Kali. He is also fiercely loyal to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and they are said to be related or what the Malays term as bau-bau bacang (reminiscent of the bacang fruit or distant relative).

Zaid and Shamsul, on the other hand, are very keen.

Zaid has his eye on the PKR elections scheduled for later this year and a shot at the parliamentary seat would boost his prospects. For Shamsul, this could be the stepping stone to bigger things.

Their problem is that they lack the local boy factor – Zaid is a Kelantanese while Shamsul is from Negri Sembilan.

Although Anwar will have the final say, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will also have a big say because he will be controlling the campaign machinery and funds.

It has not gone unnoticed that Khalid has appointed himself the election director for Hulu Selangor rather than assign it to Fuziah Salleh, who is the national election director or Abdullah Sani, who is Selangor election director.

Khalid is said to favour Zaid who also enjoys the tacit support of DAP leaders. The question is how far Khalid is prepared to push for Zaid as the man.

PKR has had the upper hand in most of the previous by-elections. But Hulu Selangor is still very much Barisan territory and PKR will be going in as the underdog.

The party has been rocked by resignations and its leader is fighting sodomy charges in court. A win will salve its wounds.

But this is one battle that the Barisan not only intends to win but is confident of doing so. However, both sides will first have to get past the politics of picking the perfect candidate.

Ramli’s release confirms moves to oust IGP, says Shamsul

SHAH ALAM: The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan’s recent denial that he is resigning from his position is a clear indication that moves are afoot to boot him out, says Angkatan Muda Keadilan chief Shamsul Iskandar.

Shamsul said apart from being linked to underworld elements, Musa has also been unable to contain the worsening crime rate in the country.

“ I believe there’s a move to oust him, especially with the large sums of money found in his home during a recent raid by the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission). Musa has to date not denied this,” he said.

Shamsul added that Musa’s denial is a strategy to stay in power to block disclosures of his corrupt and criminal activities.

He said the recent acquittal of former crime chief Datuk Ramli Yusuf by the sessions court, further reaffirmed his belief.

Ramli, who held the third highest post in the police hierarchy, had linked Musa to the underworld and criminal activities.

A lifeline from Abdullah

In 2007, Ramli alleged that he and his officers were victims of a conspiracy after a probe into underworld activities involving a Johor businessman led a trail to Musa.

Musa reached his retirement age in 2007, but continued to serve for another two years when former Prime Minister Datuk Seri (now Tun) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi threw him a lifeline.

His contract is is scheduled to expire on Sept 13, 2010.

Recently, a Chinese daily was issued a show-cause letter by Home Ministry over its exclusive news report that stated Musa had handed in his resignation letter.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein Onn, however, dismissed the report that Musa had tendered his resignation.

China Press has been given seven days to give a written reply to the letter which was issued under Section 8A of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Act 301).

Sah Musa Hassan liabiliti kepada PM Najib !

Hisham sahkan rombakan pemimpin kanan polis

AMK desak PM Najib akur fatwa Tokoh Maal Hijrah Antarabangsa, Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi

Kenyataan Media
Angkatan Muda Keadilan Malaysia

AMK desak PM Najib akur fatwa Tokoh Maal Hijrah Antarabangsa, Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradhawi
